Tessellation as decorative art in the domus of Pompeii
Tessellation is a method of covering a surface using repeated shapes – translated, rotated or reflected – without overlaps or gaps. This technique was already known in Pompeii, as shown by the many black-and-white mosaics found in the houses, featuring labyrinth and checkerboard patterns.
After a guided tour exploring the city’s mosaics, participants will take part in a hands-on tessellation workshop: an exciting and creative activity combining art and mathematics, where they’ll design and take home their own geometric pattern as a keepsake from a day of play and learning.
