Exploring ancient perfume-making techniques in Pompeii
This activity offers an in-depth look at the craft of ancient perfume production, one of the artisanal practices documented in Pompeii, with a special focus on the materials used.
In the first part, participants will explore the main methods of extracting fragrances – from enfleurage to maceration and pressing using ancient-style equipment.
The second part is hands-on: participants will prepare their own scented oil, beginning with the selection of dried aromatic leaves and flowers. These will then be crushed with a pestle, and the resulting essence will be mixed with oil in a small container to create a personalised oil infusion.
The finished product will be taken home by each participant, who will wait a few days before filtering it into a clear bottle – completing their own authentic Pompeian essence.
